Upcoming: Des Moines #140conf "The State of Now"

Still trying to wrap you head around this social media stuff? The 2012 Des Moines #140conf "State of Now" is made for you. Hundreds will descend upon Des Moines to talk about and try to understand the twitter wilderness. It's a beast that's become increasingly important to all businesses.

The #140conf events provide a platform for the worldwide twitter community to: listen, connect, share and engage with each other, while collectively exploring the effects of the emerging real-time internet on business.

Speakers present in 10 to 20 minute segments. The day moves quickly and lots of voices are heard. The event runs all day and full registration cost is $75. High school and college students will be $14.

While this is a great effort, we wonder if the 140 conference couldn't have used Tikly for the event. While the tickets would have only been cheaper by 75 cents, the fees would go to support local business. When there's an event like this that is dedicated to the local online space it seems like a no brainer to look for local options. From our experience working with Tikly is considerably more enjoyable than working with Ticketmaster.

If you don't feel like paying to go we know there was live streaming last year, but we're not so sure this time around. If anyone has gone in the past please weigh in in the comments as to why people should/shouldn't attend.

I believe the Ticketmaster thing is a requirement the Civic Center has due to their contract for ticketing at the venue.

We thought that might be the case. What a shame. It seems like the Civic Center (and other Des Moines venues) could look at switching over to a local service. Ticketmaster used to be a necessary evil but that's not really the case anymore.

We love tikly! However, Alexander is right --- it's a requirement of the Civic Center (where the Stoner Studio Theatre is) that we use Ticketmaster.

I believe you should attend (btw, I am the organizer of the event) --- and Verizon is one of sponsors and they are offering a $30 discount if you use 'verizon' when you register for your ticket. That's how much they believe you should go!

Have you seen the line up of speakers? We expect it to be an ever more amazing than last year great event.

Thanks for mentioning us -- and we are with you, anything to make Des Moines more exciting!

For those of us involved in the world of social media this presents an opportunity for us to venture outside our known groups and hear other stories of succeeding online, learn new tricks that may enhance our own goals and to meet people we may have only seen in 140 character snippets.

But, more importantly, I think this is a great event for those who may only be dipping their toes into the realm of social media- or who may be too overwhelmed to even begin. It's a terrific way for small business to see, first hand, how a free tool like Twitter may be able to spread the word about their unique product or amazing customer service. Or maybe Pinterest or Instagram, things they have never even heard of, can give them the visual boost their company has been looking for. It's a non-threatening environment filled with inspiration- and a great opportunity for every business in Iowa to meet the people who may be able to help them become a national competitor in their own business.

Just to disclose: this will be my second year as a speaker at the 140ConfDM
