Des Moines Addys- Call for Entries 2012

/ Comments (29)

2012's Addy Call for Entries should have landed in your inbox recently. This year the show is a "whodunnit" where there are looking for the most "killer work." The site is tremendously well put together and something Trilix should really be proud of. It's fun to look at and read through. We're hoping they get a ton of entries.

The Addys are the show in Des Moines and we're very interested to see what's entered this year. Entries are due by 5:00 pm, Friday December 16th. Get your killer work in now.

I've definately seen that image (silouette of the man) before. Total ripoff of Saul Bass.

Inspired by or stolen?

Wow...we didn't even notice that. There's a lot of Saul Bass "inspired" work out there, but these do seem pretty similar. That doesn't mean people shouldn't still apply.

What does everyone else think? Any Trilix employees care to weigh in?

Disappointing. That not only reflects poorly on Trilix, but also our club and ad community.

Not only the blatant rip-off, but there are multiple errors in the copy of the call for entries.

We were going to enter the Addy's this year but we haven't plagiarized anyone lately. Is that a requirement?

We think plagiarism may be a new Addys category this year. Winners will be given a wagging-finger trophy.

I don't think The ADDYs are to blame. They have nothing to do with the original designs the agency come up with. Nobody really expects somebody to use art that is so recognizable to pull in business, just to call it their own.

Definitely no homage to Saul Bass nor Ty Mattson.

With my Dexter print hanging above my computer it look me no more than 30 seconds to spot a rip-off when I received my call for entries in the mail.

Obviously not inspired, they apparently traced any artwork they could google. One stolen piece of art is arguable, two is wrong.

The hand and square architecture in the right hand corner of the poster is also in the right hand corner of the call for entries cover. Completely traced. They should have at least put it in a different corner of the page to throw me off. Maybe we should make a game of this. Five Gold Addy Points for the next found rip-off on this piece.

That being said I do not blame the Addys and still plan on entering but what was the agency thinking?

It's a hand.

There is a difference between using something for inspiration and ripping something off. This is a complete rip-off and Trilix should take a look at their reputation. Where are their morals to let this happen?

If they are ripping off artwork for an award show, a project with total creative freedom, I wonder what kind of work this agency is doing for clients?

I'm having a hard time figuring out what the Addy awards even are. That's a big copywriting mistake.

What? The AAF calls them the Addy Awards. They are the biggest/best show we have locally. What exactly are you calling them out for?

Trilix should think about employing a copywriter.

I've heard there's been a lot of turnover at Trilix, guess it's being reflected in their work.

It is a hand.

So why didn't they draw their own? Instead they traced over a very popular, highly publicized, currently winning awards poster. And stole the background design too. Not sure about you but I don't trace over things I see in print magazine. Therefore not just a hand.

It brings to mind that scene from Indiana Jones 3, where the keeper of the Grail is saying something like...

"You have chosen... poorly."

Oh well, fake it 'til you make it, amirite? ;)

Trilix is Old Latin for Original Concept and Execution.

Feh.

Mystery solved:

Who Done It? Saul Bass done it (the illustration).

Who Won It? Not Trilix (for ethics).

Can't agree this is inspiration. Looks like total rip off to me.

Bad artists copy. Good artists steal.
~ Pablo Picasso

Repeat the quote when someone eventually files a lawsuit for stealing their art.

Or when a client finds out they are paying for stolen art.

I've heard they had some turnover too. But, from what I understand, it was completely justified. I know who they let go, and I wouldn't hire those people if my life depended on it.

Maybe the people they let go didn't copy good enough.

This agency already has a reputation in town, just add stolen artwork to the list.

This is probably enough piling on about how reprehensible it is that this happened. What do you suggest we do as a creative community?
